31/10/2014 –  This £32m Network Rail operation and training facility will control the Anglian rail network when in full operation. UMC Architects worked as lead designer with Volker Fitzpatrick, co-ordinating the design using Building Information Modelling (BIM).  The fully integrated Revit model was used for clash detection and integration of building services, along with the Network Rail fit-out. The ROC is one of 12 new facilities that will replace existing operating sites and control the entire UK rail network. Volker Fitzpatrick chose to utilise SafeStand® Access Systems to provide working platforms to carry out the blockwork package on site.

10/09/2014 – A joint venture of Balfour Beatty and Kier Construction has won a £121m contract for the first two-year stage of work on the new Defence College of Technical Training at the former RAF Lyneham airbase in Wiltshire.

The 50:50 joint venture, called Hercules, was awarded the contract by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), which manages and maintains land and property for the Ministry of Defence

Hercules will deliver new single-living accommodation for military trainees and purpose-built enhanced training facilities including a large outdoor training area. It will also build a museum for Corps of Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers (REME), whose headquarters will be at the base from 2015.

The refurbished college will provide training facilities in one location for all three Armed Forces for the first time in the UK. It will bring together more than 1,100 trainees and 800 staff from the Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force.

Much of the redevelopment will consist of the upgrade and refurbishment of existing buildings. The JV will refurbish approximately 73,000 square metres of existing building stock and construct 56,000 square metres of new-build. This will comprise detailed design and construction including demolition, the construction of new buildings, refurbishment of existing buildings and landscaping.

20/08/2014 – The school have secured funding totalling £2.6m from the Education Funding Agency and Buckinghamshire County Council to build a sports hall at Stanley Hill, Amersham. The contract for the construction of the new hall has been awarded to Balfour Beatty.

The state-of-the-art facilities will include a dance and fitness studio, a gym and four badminton courts. The hall will also be available for hire in the wider community.

Not only will this enable the students to take part in a wider range of sports and activities, but in the evenings and at weekends the facility will be open for use by the local community, thus addressing a shortfall in facilities locally.

Lee Swingler Brick & Stonework have been awarded the Brick and Blockwork Sub-Contract package and will be using the SafeStand 800 system during the construction works.

13/08/2014 – Balfour Beatty Rail, have tasked Lorclon Ltd with various civil works on site at Thorney Lane, South Iver in Buckinghamshire.

Lorclon Ltd have selected the SafeStand® 1200 System to be used at varying platform heights as a fall arrest system while installing and filling the Gabion Baskets on site. SafeStand is being used as it is quick and easy to move along, where other systems were not practical.

01/08/2014 – the SafeStand® one day training achievement course has now gained independent accreditation from IOSH (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health).

This training course was developed a number of years ago in conjunction with the Health & Safety departments of Bovis Lend Lease, Carillion and Laing O’Rourke and has now been successfully delivered to in excess of 500 personnel including operatives, tradesmen, site management and health and safety professionals.

IOSH (The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health) is principally a UK based not-for-profit organisation that is made up of over 43,000members including thousands of Chartered Safety and Health Practitioners. The Institution also has an expanding international membership, with members in over 100 other countries.
